The Priest
Some parishes have only one priest, whilst others are fortunate enough to have more than one. The priest is a very busy person who has a variety of different roles in the parish, but the most obvious is that of leading the community in celebrating the Mass. The priest is also involved in the Sacramental life of the Church. This means he is involved in giving the Sacraments. The area where the priests lives is called the Presbytery and is usually located close to the Church.
A priest has a title of Fr. which would take place of Mr. This is used as a sign of respect and as a recognition of their position in society. E.g. Fr. John (Father John).
A parish priest celebrates daily Mass, hears confessions every week, gives marriage counseling, provides prenuptial counseling, gives spiritual direction, anoints and visits the sick in hospitals and nursing homes, performs the sacraments and attends numerous parish and diocesan meetings.
The Canon law of the Catholic Church holds that the priesthood is a sacred vocation, not just a profession. As a general rule, education is extensive and lasts at least five or six years, depending on the national Program of Priestly Formation. These men go to seminaries where they graduate with a Master of Divinity or a Master of Theology.
The most known form of distinctive clothing for priests is the clerical collar (or Roman collar), which takes form in either the traditional cassock, or modern day clerical shirt. The typical modern version consists of a white plastic tab, inserted into a specially made collar of a black or a white shirt.
